What is the Bradley Method®?
The Bradley® Method teaches natural childbirth and views birth as a natural,
normal process.  It is founded on the principle that, with proper education and
training, expectant couples can work together as a team using simple relaxation
techniques and abdominal breathing to achieve a natural birth.  Mothers are
taught to "tune in" to their bodies, with the aid of their coach, so that they may
cooperate with their body during the process of labor.  Well trained coaches are
better able to help facilitate the labor process by meeting the laboring woman's
needs.  The Bradley Method® is unique. Our classes stress the importance of
Healthy Baby, Healthy Mother and Healthy Families.

The Bradley Method® endorses and teaches the following ideals in class:
  •  Natural Childbirth
  •  Active participation of a loving supportive and dedicated coach
  •  Excellent nutrition, the foundation of a healthy pregnancy
  •  Avoidance of drugs during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding
(unless absolutely necessary to the health of the mother and/or baby)
  •  Relaxation and natural breathing
  •  Understanding and working with your body
  •  Immediate and continuous contact with your newborn
  •  Breastfeeding
  •  Consumerism and positive communication
  •  Taking responsibility for the safety of your birth
  •  Preparing for unexpected situations (such as emergency
 childbirth and cesarean surgery)

What is the difference between the Bradley Method® and other methods?
As Bradley® instructors, we help couples find what is most comfortable for them in
labor.  Simply put, other methods seek to distract mom from the "sensations" (pain)
of labor by using various techniques.  In early labor these techniques can distract
mom from the pain.  When mom begins to experience the height of labor
discomfort, distractions from the pain are no longer effective - that is, at some point
the pain will demand mom's full attention.
Bradley® emphasizes tuning-in to your labor, remaining calm, relaxed and in
control, and using regular, deep abdominal breathing throughout labor.  By tuning-
in to your body, a woman is in a better position to understand what is happening at
each point of the process, remain in control, not become overwhelmed, and
decrease her pain during labor.  These techniques typically lead to faster and
easier births.

Why should I have Natural Childbirth?
Natural childbirth is inherently safer for both mom and baby and has a more
positive effect on family bonding. Natural childbirth is also, in most cases, easier
and shorter than medicated births.  Natural childbirth mothers recover from birth
faster than medicated mothers, have (in most cases) an easier time of
breastfeeding and experience postpartum depression less often.
